#WMelects17

On May 4th the West Midlands went to the polls to elect Conservative candidate Andy Street as the regions first metro mayor. During the campaign Civify youth activists interviewed candidates and released a video every week until election election day. Our project gained coverage in The Huffington Post, Express & Star and a featured show on Black Country Radio. The #WMelects17 hashtag was picked up by ITV News Central, Birmingham Post, Birmingham Mail, Express & Star and a range of people sharing reflections on the election, this helped us to make over 4 million impressions and a reach of just under 2.5 million.

How we did it

We noticed the youth debate was almost none existent in the early stages of the campaign so Civify Activist Connor Hill and Hannah Jones took it upon themselves to make sure it was in the campaign narrative.

They interviewed candidates for a sequence of videos we released on YouTube alongside a dedicated blog series for The Huffington Post on each of the conversations.

The questions for the interviews were mostly sourced from social media asking local young people what they would like us to put the candidates.

We also wrote a dedicated article for the regions biggest print newspaper, the Express & Star. Black Country Radio ran a two-hour long show committed to the interviews and debate using our content with Civify Activist Mike sitting in as the main guest.

On the day of the election, we asked voters to take photos of their polling stations using the hashtag which was picked up by major news outlets resulting in the campaign having a huge reach.
