#UKelects17

This summer buoyant on the back of a huge poll lead over Jeremy Corbyn's Labour Party and the public support of Brexit, Theresa May called a snap election to increase her majority.

Well, as we now know it did not go to plan the Prime Minister but the biggest headline from that General Election for us was that young people in mass came out to vote.

Regardless of how you vote and who you voted for, what was really special about this General Election was the youth turnout has now changed the political playing field in the country. Politicians are now genuinely taking the youth democratic seriously and will have to that into account when suggesting policy at the next election.

"Some 64 per cent of registered voters aged 18-24 are now thought to have cast a vote on 9 June, the highest share since 67 per cent voted in 1992.

This brings 18-24s into line with the 25-34 and 35-44 age groups, ending two decades of disproportionately low turnout among younger voters."

On the back our campaign we summed up our #UKelects17 campaign in an exclusive article for The Huffington Post which you can read here '#GE2017: Are Young People Forcing A Shift In British Politics?'

How we did it

Civify Activists Isha, Charis, Maya, Mike, Connor, Hannah and Luke conducted a series of interviews with the candidates vying to be their next MP.

We asked them questions that considered youth representation, unemployment and regional development. These were presented in a series of YouTube videos which you can see below. The reason these are documented and put in the public domain is so you can monitor the MPs performance.

So, if we interviewed your local MP, watch the video and see if they are keeping to their word. If not, it's up to you to hold them accountable.

We also had a designated spot on Black Country Radio's current affairs program 'This Week' where Connor interviewed candidates running for election in Stourbridge, Dudley South, Dudley North and Halesowen AND Rowley Regis.

In all, we interviewed over 30 candidates and rounded it all off in an article for The Huffington Post.
